Awards Program

SWANA (Solid Waste Association of North America) is a non-profit, educational organization serving individuals and communities responsible for the management and operation of solid waste systems. As an international association dedicated to the advancement of professionalism in the field, SWANA offers workshops, training programs, technical assistance, and certifications to help meet its member's ever-growing needs.

Founded in 1961, SWANA has become the largest member-based solid waste management association in the world. The majority of SWANA members are public sector officials, while the remainder of the membership includes organizations that provide consulting services, equipment, technologies, and systems in the municipal solid waste management field.

Alabama Chapter

The Alabama Chapter of SWANA was formed in 1983 and currently serves approximately 140 members. Like its parent organization, the Alabama Chapter is committed to offering solid-waste professionals a convenient, local forum to "educate, innovate, and communicate." Our Chapter provides opportunities for operator certification training courses, sharing of technical expertise, continuing education units, and legislative/regulatory updates.

From Our Members

"SWANA gives me the chance to interact with people in my profession and in my state. We share ideas and problems. The meetings allow us to learn about upcoming changes, regulations, and the latest equipment to make our jobs easier."

David Koonce(City of Florence)

" As a member of SWANA, I am able to interact and connect with fellow members from across the entire solid waste industry in Alabama and surrounding states. The programs at SWANA meetings and events are an ideal mix of technical sessions, open discussions and networking opportunities. Because of my involvement in the Alabama Chapter of SWANA, I have been able to make both business connections and friendships that will last for years to come."

Phil Davis(ADEM)

"I have been a member of SWANA since it started as GRCDA. SWANA has provided me with the knowledge and contacts to be a successful part of the industry and given me the opportunity to contribute to the Solid Waste efforts in Alabama."
